Evaluating Rio Grande Wild Turkey Movements Post Catastrophic Wildfire Using 2 Selection Analysis Approaches

We evaluated behaviors of Rio Grande wild turkeys after a catastrophic wildfire and found that turkeys avoided the most severely burned areas and roosted in areas that did not burn or only lightly burned. We also found that turkeys used these less severely burned areas more intensively for 2 years after the burn, but the only areas they strongly avoided were the most severely burned areas. Outside of the severely burned areas, the relatively light burn intensity from the wildfire mimicked positive effects of prescribed fires.
