Habitat Selection of Wild Turkeys in Burned Longleaf Pine Savannas

We examined habitat selection of hens on sites managed intensively with prescribed fire.  We found that habitats selected by hens differed quite a bit across seasons, but mature pine stands managed with fire, shrub/scrub areas,  and hardwood stands were consistently important.  Our findings suggest that land managers should consider scale of selection by turkeys when developing habitat management strategies. Likewise, we recommend managers retain hardwoods and recognize the importance of shrub-scrub cover to management of turkey populations in fire managed pine forests.
