Land Cover and Space Use Influence Coyote Carnivory: Evidence from Stable-Isotope Analysis

We used stable isotopes to assess diets of resident and transient coyotes, the difference being that the former maintains a home range and the latter is nomadic. Although we found that mammals like deer were the most important prey item, we also found that gamebirds like wild turkeys and quail made significant contributions to coyote diets, more so than previously reported. Our findings, coupled with other recent works, suggests that wild turkeys and other gamebirds may be more important in coyote diets than previously believed.
