We described habitat characteristics at nest sites and in areas used by hens prior to nesting. We found that hens selected areas with more herbaceous vegetation, but the amount of vertical cover didn’t appear to be different in nesting areas versus random sites. We recommended that agencies maintain and manage for habitats with herbaceous plant communities, which in the pine-dominated forests we worked in, hinges on use of prescribed fire.
