The National Wild Turkey Symposium began in 1959, when the first symposium was held in Memphis, Tennessee. The idea behind the symposium was simple – bring together the nation’s experts to develop a comprehensive body of research addressing issues facing wild turkey populations. The symposium was created by people who were pioneers in the wild turkey research and management world – R. Wayne Bailey, Fred Hardy, and Don Strode among others. Since that first symposium more than 60 years ago, the peer-reviewed articles that have appeared in each volume have contributed to managing and conserving wild turkey populations throughout North America.

The National Wild Turkey Federation has sponsored the symposium from the outset, demonstrating the organization’s commitment to the wild turkey resource and the landscapes they call home.
