We took a new approach to estimating home ranges for Rio Grande hens, basing our estimates solely on where birds were in the reproductive phases of the spring. We found that prior to laying, hens used larger ranges than during other phases, which suggests that they were exploring areas during this time. Hens spent 50% of their time during incubation within an area < 4 acres. Our findings indicate that looking at how much space hens use should be focused on the reproductive phases of each hen, rather than on calendar dates or seasons.
